St Ives Lose to Teignmouth
Teignmouth 55 v 23 St Ives
Last Saturday St Ives travelled to Devon side Teignmouth in what was a re-arranged fixture from the game postponed back in November. The proximity of the game to Christmas gave the Hakes several problems with selection that meant many changes from the last game at home to Devonport. Sam Vernon started at prop with Kye Beasley returning from injury in the second row. Pete Mabbott moved in to the flank with Joel Bick on the wing. Jack Kessell moved in to partner Grant Thirlby in the centre. John Lamsin was the only replacement named to travel.
Teignmouth began the game well and took an early lead through a penalty kick when St Ives were found to be offside in defence in the 7th minute. Dan Magee struck back with a penalty of his own to put St Ives level at 3 points each after 12 minutes.
The Hakes suffered a setback in the 18th minute when they lost winger Joe Parma to a yellow card for a high tackle. Teignmouth reacted well and put the Hakes under pressure while they were reduced to 14 men. During that period they scored two converted tries to give them a lead of 17 points to 3 with 22 minutes gone.
In the 23rd minute fly half Rhys Brownfield slotted a drop goal to double the St Ives points tally to 6. Teignmouth, however, struck back almost immediately with another two un-converted tries to move the score on to Teignmouth 27, St Ives 6.
Scrum half Liam Jolly broke out of defence well in the 37th minute and ran deep into the Teignmouth half before releasing winger Joel Bick to score his first try for St Ives. No conversion left the Hakes trailing by 27 points to 11.
It was the hosts who had the last say of the first period with another converted try to make the score at the break Teignmouth 34, St Ives 11.
With a huge task ahead to get anything from the game the St Ives players started the second half well and gave some hope of a revival. In the 44th minute Ben Taylor forced his way over the line from close in to score St Ives second try of the afternoon. Dan Magee added the conversion to make the score 34-18.
From the restart St Ives gathered the ball and immediately attacked the hosts once more. The pressure from the St Ives players once again bore fruit when Aden Brassington crossed for the try. With no conversion St Ives now trailed by 34 points to 23 giving the St Ives coaching staff some hope of getting back on terms with their hosts.
Unfortunately for the St Ives players it wasn’t to be and Teignmouth ran in three more converted tries with no reply from the Hakes to make the final score Teignmouth 55, St Ives 23.
St Ives go into the Christmas break sitting in 4th place in the South West One West league table. They trail 3rd placed Newent by 5 points and have a slender one point advantage over the team in 5th spot; Bridgwater & Albion.
With the traditional Boxing Day fixture cancelled due to Hayle not being able to raise a side the Hakes are back in action in the New Year on Saturday 5th January with a home game against Coney Hill. Kick off at Alexandra Road for that game will be at 2:30, any home support would be very much appreciated.
