Results Bring Chasers Closer

Although The Hakes were not playing this weekend, it was a 'spare' within the league for outstanding fixtures to be played. Both of our nearest rivals were in action and gained narrow victories.

Chard 10 Devonport Services 17

Devonport Services, in second place travelled to Chard for a re-arranged match. After taking an early lead from a penalty goal, the visitors found themselves under immense pressure from a determined home side. However, there was no further score in the first half.

In the second period Devonport created two converted tries, before Chard hit back with two of their own, both unconverted. So, our closest chasers find themselves seven points adrift with one game in hand. Before the month is up, they have to travel to Falmouth and Kingsbridge. Not until 14th April, in the penultimate set of fixtures, do St Ives have to visit Devonport.

Torquay Athletic 7 St Austell 10

After the previous match was abandoned on 20th January, St Austell, currently holding down fourth place, were required to prioritise the league before the cup semi final with The Hakes on Saturday.

"A game that survived an early morning pitch inspection was abandoned in the 74th minute following a serious elbow injury to Torquay Athletic replacement Joel Hempton."

Paul Hayes (Torquay Athletic RFC website report).

A low scoring game gave The Saints another four points. They really needed a bonus point win, so Torquay helped to keep them two bonus point wins from St Ives.

Saturday 10th March is an important date in the calendar of this league, when St Austell meet Devonport Services at home.

It remains in The Hakes' hands to gain promotion. It's going to be an exciting end to the season. Next match is Torquay Athletic this coming Saturday, 17th February.
